About Advanced Mechanical Systems Ltd
Advanced Mechanical Systems Ltd (AMS) is a Bristol-based engineering company developing specialist robotic and mechatronic systems for challenging industrial and technical applications.
Our work spans robotic platforms, restricted-access systems, remote and automated equipment, inspection and scanning systems, deployment technology, specialist tooling and application-specific R&D.
AMS develops solutions around the task and operating environment, combining system architecture, mechanical and mechatronic engineering, manufacture, controls, integration and testing.
What we do
AMS provides end-to-end robotic and mechatronic engineering, from early feasibility and concept development through to prototype and deployable systems.
Our core activities include:
• Robotic and mechatronic system development
• Application-specific robotic platforms
• Restricted-access and remote systems
• Inspection, scanning and sensor deployment equipment
• Payload integration, tooling and mechanical interfaces
• Controls, actuation and system integration
• Prototyping, manufacture, assembly and functional testing
• Technical documentation and deployment support
Projects range from early-stage R&D and experimental proof-of-concept through to robust systems developed for field deployment.
How we work
Projects typically begin with the required task, operating environment, access or mobility constraints, payload and interfaces, and the performance that needs to be achieved. We define the system requirements and develop concepts around the real geometry and operating conditions.
Once an approach is established, we progress through detailed design, manufacturing data, prototype or system build, controls and integration, followed by representative testing and refinement.
The engineers responsible for the design remain involved through manufacture, assembly and testing, maintaining a direct link between the original requirement, engineering decisions and observed performance.
Inspection & Sensor Integration
Inspection and sensing form an important part of AMS's capability. We work with client-specified NDT, RVI and sensing technologies including eddy current, eddy current array, ultrasonic, phased array, cameras and other sensor types where appropriate.
AMS develops the robotic, mechanical and deployment systems required to position and operate these payloads accurately and repeatably, supporting the movement, contact, coverage and controlled recovery required by the application.
Project types
AMS undertakes projects where the application demands a tailored robotic, mechatronic or mechanical solution.
Typical challenges include:
• Restricted or complex access
• Unusual geometry or mobility requirements
• Remote payload deployment and positioning
• Inspection or sensing requiring controlled and repeatable movement
• Safety-critical or regulated operating environments
• New robotic concepts requiring feasibility development and experimental validation
• Application-specific automation or remote operation
Deliverables range from specialist tooling and robotic platforms to modular systems, proof-of-concept prototypes and complete deployable equipment.
Why AMS
AMS is a small, focused engineering company. Clients work directly with the engineers responsible for designing and building their systems, enabling rapid technical decisions, clear communication and efficient iteration as requirements develop.
We have extensive experience working in safety-critical and regulated environments where documentation, traceability and controlled change are expected, alongside early-stage R&D programmes where new robotic concepts require engineering development and experimental validation.
AMS provides focused engineering capability for robotic and mechatronic challenges requiring a tailored approach, from initial concept through detailed development, practical testing and deployment.
